A9 Kingdom of Bahrain qrv on 4m band !!

Dave EI3IO reports

In a major spectrum consultation exercise launched by the Bahraini telecommunications regulator, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), seeks comments inter alia on whether all or parts of the band 69.95 - 70.5 MHz should be offered to the amateur service in Bahrain for propagation experiments. The consultation document (which also seeks comments on 500 kHz and 5 MHz) can be downloaded from http://www.tra.org.bh.

A new National Frequency Plan has also been published which allocates the band 50-50.5 MHz to the amateur service on a national primary basis and 50.5 - 52 MHz to the amateur service on a national secondary basis. New arrangements are also included for 136 kHz, 1.8 MHz 7 MHz and 430 MHz.

CQ WW CW MONITORING !!!!!

Denis SV8RV just send me a very interesting email

His station works with a powerful PC as a monitoring station in cw CQWW CONTEST.
It uses the latest technology QS1R receiver who is scheduled to act as receiver to 7 bands of HF Simultaneously and decodes 96 KHZ in each band the same time. Everything emits CQ recorded and passed on the petition and the www.reversebeacon.net www.pskrporter.info

Statistical reports you can see here. http://www.pskreporter.info/cgi-bin/pskstats.pl

In the attached picture you can see that the system enough to use both at around 1400 decoders ie as if we were 1400 operators and looking for us.

Take the statistics very carefully. The statistical analysis of the reports should be made at the end of the contest. It all of course they are made thanks to the innovative software VE3NEA (skimmer server)

OH Finland now qrv on 4m band !!

Great news from http://www.70mhz.org/

Bo,OZ2M writes

As of today Ficora, the Finnish regulator, has granted access to the 4 m band in Finland

Frequency slots: 70,000-70,175 MHz and 70,225 - 70,300 MHz. Maximum power is 25 W, 30 W or 100 W depending on location and license class.

Transmission is not permitted:

- within Lieksa, lomants, Joensuu, Kontiolahti, Polvijärvi, Juuka, Nurmes, Valtimo, Kuhmo, Hyrynsalmi, Suomussalmi, Ristijärvi och Sotkamo municipalities

- transmission less than 50 km from the boarder to Russia is only permitted with the antenna main loop pointing away from 0°-180°

- maximum transmission power is limited to 25 W when distance to the Norwegian and Swedish boarders are less than 50 km

Only locators KP53 & KP54 can't be QRV.

Analog switch-off for Digital switchover TV and what this means for an amateur radio station !!

Good friend Bo,OZ2M reports today

Hello

Then came the final night when the analog TV transmitters were closed. I was very
wonder what it would mean for me since I live only 3 km in a direct line
from Gladsaxe transmitter on channel 4th

It meant something then? YES it did!

Before I had the intermodulation between P3 at 93.9 MHz and the sideband noise of
K4. It has now disappeared. Overall, 6-10 dB improvement and dust the floor is now
almost fell. Directly at the transmitter is improving even better though
I do not have any measurements of it.

So the transition from analog TV to digital TV appears to be an unconditional
success here in Herlev.

Help to keep GB3MCB on air

G3ZYY reports

Hi All, I have just posted the following on the UKSMG site and thought you guys would also be interested:

Many of you will be unaware that the GB3MCB beacons comprising beacons for 2m 4m 6m and 70cms are due to be switched off on April 2nd due to lack of funding. Full details of the background to this will appear in
a forthcoming 'Six News' but in brief, the Mid Cornwall Beacon and
Repeater Group, which has a relatively small contributory user base, has insufficient funds to run all of the transmitters associated with the group. The groups main function until recently has been the upkeep of their 2m and 70cm Repeaters but they have now become responsible for the beacon system also.

From a 6m point of view, the good news is that UKSMG have stepped in to
ensure funds are available to allow the 6m beacon to continue. The
other beacons are expected to shut down in about two weeks time. It is
not within our (UKSMG) remit to directly help fund the remaining beacons however, it would not take a great deal of funding to keep all of these beacons running for the coming year at least, and probably into the forseeable future.

Details of contacts for the group for anyone wishing to help with funding are available here:
http://www.btinternet.com/~kevin.francks/GB3NC.htm
However, it seems to me that a co-ordinated approach by groups with a
vested interest in individual beacons (as we UKSMG have done) would be
the best approach to ensure the beacons remained active although please
note the short timescales involved. As a rough guide, it costs
approximately £2 per week per beacon to provide electricity or about
£120 per year. A small cost when the benefits are considered

Austrian 4 m beacon QRV in summer

Peter OE5MPL have good news about a new 4m beacon
Reports :

I am happy to announce, that we have received a license to operate a beacon on the 4 m band.

We did not get the vanity call OE5FOUR. Instead we got OE5QL. This is no Amateur Radio Call the Austrian PTT said. It is an Experimental Operation Radio Call.

Well, there are some restrictions. Time limit is 1 June and until 31 August 2009. Transmission is only 2 minutes per sequence between 04:00 and 19:47 UTC. Each sequence begins at full hour +00 min., +15 min., +30 min. and +45 min, e.g. 04:00-04:02, 04:15-04:17, 04:30-03:32 and 04:45-04:47. Transmission power is 1 W ERP the first minute of each sequence and 5 W ERP the second minute of each sequence.

If the beacon does not interfere with services outside of Austria, an extension is possible after August 2009 the Austrian PTT said.

Anyway after August 2009 we will try to negotiations for 24/7 duration period for the beacon.

This is just the first step, following the offered directives of our PTT in Vienna.

The beacon frequency is 70,045 MHz, location for the beacon JN78CJ, 860 mASL and the antenna a Half-Wave Vertical with Collins Filter design DK7ZB/OZ2M will be used.

Satellite internet instalation in Gjirokastër,Albania

Yesterday i had the opportunity to travel in Gjirokaster (or Argyrokastro in Greek) Albania for the installation of a satellite system providing broadband connection 1Mbps via HELLASSAT 2 at 39deg east.
It is not possible to have a broadband connection through a local provider in Gjirokaster so this solution was the only way.
The system receives and also transmits through the LNB with a maximum power 0,5w on 12ghz
Two cables are ending in the modem and through an ethernet port you can connect your pc to the internet.
I think that this could be a nice idea for some dx peditions in places that there is no local broadband connection.
More info about the satellite provider at http://broadband.hellas-sat.net/

QSL.net & QTH.net Announcement

Al,K3TKJ reports

December 31, 2008

Dear fellow hams,

After 13 years of providing hams with no cost web space, e-mail forwarding and mailing list services through QSL.net and QTH.net, I have decided to retire. All QSL.net and QTH.net servers and Internet connections at my home QTH are being turned down.

Scott KA9FOX has graciously decided to pick up where I left off, and he is in the process of migrating all services to new hardware. See below for an update on the status of the migration.

I want to thank all of you for all of your support over the years, and I hope that you will support Scott as he takes over the reigns.

See you on the air!
